TriMuon swaps DiMuon's Polar Express step for a faster, more accurate polar approximation; we compare held-out SFT loss against shared dimuon-lite at matched steps.

Reproducible on Spindle: yes — Needs a Spindle fork: add the TriMuon optimizer (Polar Switch passes plus Newton-Schulz refinements) next to dimuon-lite. A short tinker SDK LoRA SFT script on a served Qwen model then tests the claim.

TriMuon vs dimuon-lite (Polar Express) for LoRA SFT on no_robots

Hypothesis. With a Spindle fork that adds TriMuon, LoRA SFT on Qwen3.5-4B reaches held-out no_robots loss at least 0.01 nats lower than dimuon-lite (Polar Express) at its best LR, after the same 80 steps.

Method. Fork modal-projects/spindle and add TriMuon as an optimizer option. It keeps DiMuon's recovered momentum and preconditioning rules. It replaces only the Polar Express polar step with two outer Polar Switch passes, then four cubic Newton-Schulz refinements folded into the rank x rank multiplier.

Qwen/Qwen3.5-4B SFT 80 steps batch 64 rank 32 no_robots eval no_robots test split · mean per-token NLL on assistant tokens 1.8 GPU-h 120 min cap

Success criterion. Validated if best-LR TriMuon eval NLL is at least 0.01 nats below best-LR dimuon-lite eval NLL, and TriMuon's median optimizer step time is not higher. Failed if the gap is under 0.01 nats or reversed. A rerun of the best PE config with a second seed is optional, if budget allows, to check that the 0.01 margin exceeds seed noise.

Failed no result The preflight probe on shared Spindle failed: the server returned HTTP 400 'optimizer family dimuon is not supported' when asked to create a Qwen/Qwen3.5-4B rank-32 LoRA with DimuonOptimizerConfig. 4m 51s — 1h ago
Succeeded not supported On a throwaway Spindle fork (dimuon-lite Miles branch + TriMuon reimplemented from the spec), rank-32 LoRA SFT of Qwen3.5-4B on no_robots for 80 steps gave essentially identical held-out NLL for TriMuon and dimuon-lite (Polar Express) at every LR (|gap| <= 0.0011 nats; spec-grid best at 2e-4: PE 2.10079 vs TriMuon 2.10143), while TriMuon's median optimizer step was ~2.5x slower (0.40 s vs 0.16 s). 1h 24m — 5h ago

Since I keep getting asked about my Dimuon experiments: I benchmarked Polar Switch (https://arxiv.org/html/2610.26742v1) as a replacement for Polar Express in our DiMuon candidate, then pushed it further. The new candidate is TriMuon, with the refined polar approximation Polar Express Junction. The recovered momentum and preconditioning rules are unchanged.

The refined candidate is both faster and more accurate than our compiled PE baseline and upstream PS on the original saved Qwen3-8B rank-32 LoRA workload. For 288 factors, final-update error against the ideal FP64 SVD-based polar reference is: PE 14.41% mean / 41.02% p99 / 47.88% worst. PS3 11.18% / 35.25% / 41.26%. TriMuon (FP16 polar core + four refinements) 2.22% mean / 8.22% p99 / 9.90% worst, mean cosine 0.999619.
Matched optimizer GPU time, B200 / H100: PE 7.121 / 7.228 ms. PS 6.487 / 6.239 ms. TriMuon 5.986 / 6.028 ms (15.9% / 16.6% less time than PE).
Why both faster and more accurate? Two outer Polar Switch passes instead of five PE iterations, then four cubic Newton-Schulz refinements folded into the small rank x rank multiplier before its final rectangular apply.
Still to establish: better downstream models, convergence and end-to-end training cost. These are CUDA-graph optimizer-only measurements. We need paired Spindle LoRA training/hparam sweeps against PE, PS and AdamW before claiming customer benefit or releasing broadly.

[peyton] what experiments or justification would we need to actually release this?
[aaron] for normal pretraining I would do an hparam suite autoresearch. For this I guess we would try to replicate and beat Lora-MUON's benchmarks: https://arxiv.org/abs/2606.12921
[aaron] I also disabled TF32 for safety but I should see if that matters in practice
[aaron] I guess we should also test some big boy MoEs as I already did Qwen level widths
[peyton] in general, i'm wary about releasing absent having a significant body of work showing effectiveness
[aaron] We need an autoresearch harness for Spindle. Also that could be deployed to customers for LR sweeps etc
[aaron] Like DiMuon this has no beta2 no weight decay so that's nice

31/100 · I'd run the adjacent dimuon-lite vs AdamW test on Qwen3.5-4B with a small LR sweep and two seeds, to see if PE's update error matters for eval loss. If PE ≈ AdamW or the gap is within noise, TriMuon's 2% error likely won't matter. Dealbreaker, no-affordable-version: The TriMuon, PS and PE comparison cannot run at any size without server-side implementation. Only the adjacent dimuon-lite vs AdamW baseline is affordable, and it doesn't answer the question. 2/5 budget-fit: TriMuon, PS and AdamW cannot run on Spindle, so only a dimuon-lite vs AdamW baseline fits (~1 GPU-hour on 4B). The actual comparison is out of reach, and the proposed hparam sweeps would exceed budget. 2/5 signal-per-gpu-hour: The only runnable arm is the PE vs AdamW baseline, which doesn't test TriMuon. A cheaper proxy, offline optimizer-step error on saved LoRA factors, already exists and is what the author has. 2/5 small-scale-validity: PE's 14% update error vs TriMuon's 2% may not change eval loss, since Muon-style methods tolerate approximation. Aaron also wants MoE tests, so scale transfer is untested. 4/5 throughput-risk: SFT on no_robots with a 4B LoRA has short sequences and no sampling. Wall clock is predictable. The residual risk is the LR sweep multiplying run count. Compute Hawk rubric v1

25/100 · Your polar-error and timing numbers are strong, but I can't see what downstream result would stop you. Write down the threshold, e.g. no eval-loss gain over dimuon-lite across the LR sweep, and run the dimuon-lite vs AdamW baseline first. Test whether polar accuracy matters at all. Dealbreaker, untestable: TriMuon and Polar Switch can't be run on Spindle (no server-side support, no weight-write API), so the stated comparison is untestable by the exchange. 2/5 riskiest-assumption: Real risk is that lower polar error (2% vs 14%) doesn't improve eval loss; this is only implied by 'still to establish'. Nothing tests it first. 2/5 negative-result-value: Cannot run on Spindle. The adjacent dimuon-lite vs AdamW run informs the PE baseline but not TriMuon; a flat TriMuon result would be confounded by deployment and hparams. 3/5 setup-sanity-checks: Optimizer-only error is checked against an FP64 SVD polar reference. Nothing ties LoRA SFT to a known number; the Lora-MUON replication is suggested but not specified. 1/5 kill-criteria: No stopping rule. Peyton wants 'a significant body of work' and Aaron proposes open-ended hparam autoresearch, which could absorb compute indefinitely. Pre-mortem rubric v1

42/100 · Optimizer-only numbers are strong, but I'd first link Aaron's DiMuon runs and Kailash's reconstruction so we don't repeat them. Then state why 2% polar error should change eval loss. Meanwhile, run the dimuon-lite versus AdamW baseline as the bar to beat. 3/5 novelty: Swaps Polar Express for Polar Switch plus Newton-Schulz refinements in a rank-32 LoRA setting. Plausibly a modest delta on known polar methods; downstream effect on SFT eval loss is unknown. 3/5 positioning: Cites Polar Switch, PE, and Lora-MUON (in chat), with concrete error and timing deltas. But no stated hypothesis for the downstream eval-loss delta or what Lora-MUON comparison adds. 2/5 duplication-risk: Aaron's DiMuon work, Kailash's reconstruction link, and a possible autoresearch harness all overlap. The idea doesn't link or coordinate them, and results sit in Slack. 3/5 insight: Plausible: lower polar error and faster steps should help. But the source doesn't argue why 2% versus 14% error would change eval loss, or when it wouldn't. Prior Art rubric v1

19/100 · Your optimizer-step numbers are interesting, but nobody else can rerun them: the workload is unnamed, there's no code, and Spindle can't run TriMuon. Publish the script, seeds and workload, then deploy it. Meanwhile the dimuon-lite vs AdamW baseline on no_robots is the reproducible piece. Dealbreaker, closed-dependency: The core claim requires TriMuon and Polar Switch as server-side optimizers, which Spindle lacks. They can't be implemented client-side without a weight-write API. 2/5 data-available: Optimizer numbers use an unnamed 'saved Qwen3-8B rank-32 LoRA workload' (288 factors). No hf_path or split for training or eval; only the triage's no_robots adjacent run is named. 1/5 stock-tooling: Spindle's optim_step offers only AdamW and dimuon-lite (PE). TriMuon and Polar Switch are unavailable server-side and can't be done client-side without a weight-write API. 2/5 rerunnable: Source gives no command, config, seeds or code for the saved workload. TF32 is disabled and CUDA-graph timings are quoted, but nothing is pinned for a later rerun. 2/5 claim-evidence: Specific numbers (PE 14.41% vs TriMuon 2.22% mean error; 5.986 vs 7.121 ms), but they come from an internal chat post, with no code and only optimizer-step metrics, no downstream results. 31/100 · Run the triage's adjacent experiment first: dimuon-lite vs AdamW on Qwen3.5-4B with no_robots, one LR each, 2-3 seeds, under an hour. It sets the PE baseline. Defer PS, TriMuon, MoEs and the harness until that shows a signal. 2/5 one-variable: TriMuon bundles Polar Switch passes, FP16 core and four refinements; the comparison spans PE, PS, AdamW and hparam sweeps, so gains can't be attributed to one change. 2/5 smallest-version: Source proposes Lora-MUON replication, hparam sweeps, big MoEs and an autoresearch harness. The triage's dimuon-lite vs AdamW on Qwen3.5-4B is smaller but still needs trimming. 3/5 incremental-path: Ladder is implied (baseline, deploy, paired sweeps, MoEs, release), but gates are unspelled and step one can't run until TriMuon is deployed server-side. 21/100 · Update accuracy and step time don't show a better LoRA optimizer. TriMuon can't run on Spindle, so this isn't testable now. First run tuned dimuon-lite vs AdamW with per-method LR sweeps, 3+ seeds, and a pre-set eval-loss margin; only then measure TriMuon against that. 2/5 falsifiable-hypothesis: Direction (eval loss beats PE, PS, AdamW) is stated, but no margin W is set. 'Beats' with no threshold means any tiny difference could count. 2/5 fair-baseline: Mentions PE, PS and AdamW, but no LR tuning plan. Muon-style optimizers need separate LR sweeps; the proposed adjacent run is untuned dimuon-lite vs AdamW. 2/5 confounds: Optimizer-step error and speed don't control LR, effective batch, or tokens seen. TF32 disabled and Qwen3-8B vs Qwen3.5-4B differences are untested. No-beta2/no-WD vs AdamW is a confound. 1/5 noise: No seeds or eval-size plan. A 2% update-error gain may translate to eval-loss differences below seed spread. Optimizer-only timing says nothing about this. 2/5 eval-validity: Update error vs FP64 polar and step time are not downstream quality. Held-out eval loss on no_robots is plausible but unspecified and not run; eval loss may not reflect task quality. Reviewer 2 rubric v1

34/100 · Run the dimuon-lite vs AdamW baseline on Qwen3.5-4B first. Customers will want that answer now, and it tests a thinly exercised optimizer. Reframe it as the bar TriMuon must beat. Optimizer-step speed doesn't change customer decisions until eval loss shows it. 2/5 customer-action: Customers can't use TriMuon; only dimuon-lite vs AdamW is testable. Evidence so far is optimizer-step error and ~16% faster optimizer time, not downstream quality or end-to-end cost. 2/5 recipe-potential: As posed, nothing is copyable. The adjacent dimuon-lite vs AdamW on Qwen3.5-4B/no_robots could become a clean before/after recipe, but it isn't TriMuon. 3/5 product-feedback: The adjacent run exercises dimuon-lite, a less-used optimizer path. TriMuon itself exercises nothing, and the missing weight-write API is a gap but not a bug found. 3/5 story: Error numbers (14.41% to 2.22% mean) are crisp, but the downstream claim is unproven and needs caveats about FP16, TF32 and optimizer-only timing. A second seed for noise should not be optional. 1/5 capability-probe: No one-step probe of TrimuonOptimizerConfig/TrimuonParams on the fork before the 6 runs; the fork-only optimizer would only fail once the run starts. 3/5 tuning-parity: Both arms sweep {5e-5,1e-4,2e-4} with 80 steps each, but no edge rule; Muon-style best LR may sit at 2e-4. Selection off step-80 eval is fine. 2/5 riskiest-assumption: Not named. The key assumption, that 2% polar error translates into 0.01 nats on a 4B model and the fork matches the recovered rules, has no pre-training check. Instrument Check rubric v1
